A Common Enemy

Although Chapter 5 may open with gunfire, that threat is nothing compared to the bully of the Wazir Akbar Khan section of Kabul. With his stainless-steel brass knuckles, the tall, blond, blue-eyed Assef terrorizes the boys in the neighborhood, especially Amir and Hassan. Assef is truly a scary young man. Beyond the immediate physical threat he poses to the boys, what about his words and actions did you find the most frightening? Select one thing that is said by Assef, explain what about his words you found the most unnerving, and then connect it to some real world circumstance or event.

  1. I did not like the way Assef was talking. He was saying cruel things to Hassan and being rude. Assef was talking about how the king was gone. Assef said "Afghanistan is the land of Pashtuns. It always has been and always will be. We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this Flat-Nose here. His people pollute our homeland, our watan. They dirty our blood." This connects to the tragedy of Hitler. Hitler wanted to get rid of everybody who was not his kind. Assef wishes that Hitler was still the leader because he feels that this world would be a better place.

  2. Assef is just a bully you wants to punish somebody. He has said "Hey Hazara", and "wheres your slingshot" to Hassan and Amir. He is pretty much trying to intimadate them, by showing them his brass nuckles. Assef is in many ways like Adof Hitler. He is a man who is looking to beat people down, and gets joy from it.

  3. When Assef said “You’re bothering me very much. In fact, you bother me more than this Hazara here. How can you talk to him, play with him, let him touch you?” he says this with anger and fury towards Amir. Assef was being very rude to Amir because he does not like that he associates with Hassan who is a different type of Muslim. This connects to someone who is prejudice against something and does not want to have anything to do with it or know anyone who does.

  4. “You’re bothering me very much. In fact, you bother me more than this Hazara here. How can you talk to him, play with him, let him touch you?” (pg. 41) It wasn’t the way that Assef said this, it was how the author described him saying it and the image I saw in my head while reading this. When the author described him saying this he said Assefs’ voice was “dripping with disgust.” I could imagine the tall, blond haired, blue-eyed boy standing there looking completely sickened. I could picture him standing there questioning Hassan and Amir, his eyes squinting, looking very inquisitive. When Assef slipped those stainless-steel brass knuckles on, I pictured the icy look he gave to Amir. I can imagine Assef having the same vicious look a serial killer would have right before he slit his victims’ throat. We have seen very little of Assef so far, but from what we have seen, I can tell this boy is truly evil. Just reading about his actions in the book leave me very intimidated.

  5. “Afghanistan is the land of Pashtuns. It always has been, always will be. We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this flat-nose here. His people pollute our homeland, our watan. They dirty our blood.” I found this to be the most frightening thing Assef said when he was talking to Amir and Hassan. The statement was alarming do to the fact he’s still a child and thinks this way. It shows he’s not open to diversity and shares the same psycho viewpoints as Aryan revolutionaries. Those same thoughts launched and fueled Hitler’s attempt to “Cleanse Germany” in other words wipe out anyone or anything that wasn’t German which lead to World War 2.

  8. One thing that Assef says that is seriously unnerving is that he agrees if everyone was more like Hitler the world would be a better place. This boy, Assef, is crazy. Assef was born to a Germen mother and Afghan father, the blond, blue-eyed Assef towered over the other kids. He speaks as if his words are the law. That the Hazara race should be killed off just like Hitler did with the Jews. His words are just like Hitler’s. Assef has a mentality of Hitler. Racism is still a big part of this world, in America racism between blacks and whites and other ethnic backgrounds exist. Like the KKK still exist in certain area of America.
Hitler killed Jews because he felt they were not worth anything and that the best race was the Arian race which contains only people with pale skin, blond hair, and blue eyes.

  9. Aseef the neighborhood bully is a very frightening boy to many people especially Hassan and Amir. He says some very cruel thing to Hassan and Amir about the fact that they are somewhat friends. “Afghanistan is the land of Pashtuns. It always has been, always will be. We are the true Afghans, the pure Afghans, not this flat-nose here. His people pollute our homeland, our watan. They dirty our blood.” Assef often compares himself to Hitler because just as Hitler he is a racist and want to annihilate the Hazaras race

  11. One thing that Assef says that frightens me is when he talks about Hitler. He says that Hitler is a great man and had the right idea about how people of a different race or culture. This intimidates me because Hitler was a horrible person who killed millions if innocent people and Assef might turn out just like him. To know that there is someone else in the world like Hitler is terrifying.
