Okonkwo Returns

Seven years have passed and Okonkwo has returned to Umuofia with his family. Although he has carefully crafted his return, things are not going as well as he hoped. First, things are not exactly the way he left them. Okonkwo has been replaced by another as a leader in the village and the white church has expanded its influence. Under the care and influence of Mr. Brown, the church has built a strong relationship with many of the prominent men in Umuofia and it has even built a school and hospital. Moreover, his plans for recapturing the attention and recognition of the clan has been postponed since his return is not aligned with the timing of titles. His sons cannot yet take the Ozo title and he cannot take the one he wanted. To make matters even worse, there is now a foreign government firmly established in the area, and it has hired native converts as court messengers who enforce its laws and punishments. There are too many changes and Okonkwo is not happy. In fact, he is angry and resentful. As you continue to read, think about what is happening. What effects are these changes having on the tribe and Okonkwo and his family? Select one significant event from Chapters 22-24 and explain why you think it is important.

  1. The effects the changes are having on the tribe and Okonkwo and his family is Nowye leaves to convert with the white church. Also, the family gets torn apart. Okonkwo becomes more into fighting the Europeans. Okonkwo becomes overwhelmed by the fact he does not have control over everything which leads to him killing himself.

  2. One significant event that had taken place was Okonkwo and some of the other clans’ men of high title were thrown in jail. They were treated like animals, they were beat, their heads were shaved, and more. Okonkwo is already fed-up about everything that is happening with the coming of the Europeans and now he is filled with hate, now wants to kill them even more. By this event occurring, it makes some of the Africans want to things that go against their beliefs or do unexpected things like when Okonkwo killed himself. Ezinma is like her father, she wants something to be done. The Africans want to drive the Europeans out of their village because they are not wanted there especially after everything they have done.

  3. Children aren't coloring books. You don’t get to fill them with your favorite colors." I too, agree with Rahim Khan. Honestly you never know who are raising. Meaning u could be raising the next greatest author of the next generation, biggest musical artist, or even the next president. But that wouldn’t happen if the parent tells them to do something that their mind, hart, nor soul isn’t into. Baba wants Amir to be just like him but Baba doesn’t understand that Amir is very different of him. Amir is a leader like his father. Amir is very interested in writing and he writes his own story but Baba doesn’t pay much attention to it because Baba doesn’t want Amir to be a writer, Baba wants Amir to be like him.

  4. Because of all the changes in the villages when okonkwo returns it affect him and his family. There are things that he can’t do now because of the changes. Also he and a group of others get arrested and are beaten until agreed to pay a fine that was enforced by the European government.
