Now Why Did He Do That?: The Author, Not the Character
As you probably noticed, there are many similarities between Kite Runner and Things Fall Apart. Both authors are telling stories that involve fathers and sons, are set in countries/culture seemingly different than our own, and confront cultural conflicts within a culture and between cultures. Of course, in order to tell these stories in an engaging and interesting way, the authors have made some similar "storytelling" choices. What are some of the techniques both authors use to help you as readers better understand what's going on in the story? (Don't be afraid to consider some of the choices we discussed in class with Things Fall Apart.)
One of the techniques that both authors use to help readers understand what's going on in the story is theme. The author's both use cultural theme and father-son relationship theme throughout their story. The Kite Runner and Things Fall Apart both show cultural conflict within their society. This technique better helps us understand what is going on in the story.
ReplyDeleteThe techniques that the authore Achebe and Hosseini both uses in the novel are son and father relationships. I believe that in the novels that the son's really didn't have a close relationship with their fathers. In the book "Things Fall Apart" the son just wanted to be what he wanted and didnt care what his father though of him. In the book "The Kite Runner" the son just want to have a close relationship with his father to prove to him that he can accomplish things just like him.
ReplyDeleteOne of the literary techniques that Achebe and Hosseini both used in there novel was dialect. Achebe's novel "Things Fall Apart" use African dialect and Hosseini used Afghan dialect in "The Kite Runner". Using this technique helps readers get a better understanding on how people really speak in certain countries. In Kite Runner the author used words like naan which is a certain type of bread they eat and they also speak muslim language in the book. Things Falls Apart has the same thing because it has words like chi which means personal god and nno which means welcome.
ReplyDeleteSome of the techniques that both authors use to help readers understand what is going on are the different themes in the stories. In both of the stories the author's use a relationship theme between a father and a son. Also, another theme is the culture conflicts between societies. By using these techniques the author helps the reader better understand what is happening in the story.
ReplyDeleteSome of the techniques that both authors use to help us as readers better understand what’s going on is the story is irony, and cultural languages. From the Book “Kite Runner” Khaled Hossenii uses irony in his novel by having conflicts or situations and not long after a change happens, positive or negative, that had something to do with the original situation. For example, at one point in the novel Kite Runner it was Hassan’s birthday and his gifts were being given. Baba had always given Hassan something very nice for his birthdays but this year was different. His present this year was to get his lip fixed. It was cosmetic surgery that was his birthday present. It was different and Hassan agreed to it. He had gotten the surgery and was smiling a lot more. Now that his smile was more recognized as a smile and his scar was healing, it was IRONIC that that was the winter that Hassan STOPPED smiling. “By the following winter, it was only a faint scar. Which was ironic. Because that was the winter Hassan stopped smiling.” (page47). The author of Kite runner also uses Culture language in the novel. They use words such as “Agha” and “Naan”. They used the Word Agha as a sign of respect. Hassan used the word all the time with Amir and even at one point Asseff. The word “Naan” is used as a type of bread that the people of Afghanistan used to make and eat. Irony is also used in “Things fall apart”. At one point in the novel Okonkwo, had gotten really mad at one of his wives for cutting some leaves off of a tree in their compound. He thought that she had killed the tree and that she deserved to be beat. So he had beaten her and she provoked him and said that he couldn’t shot, he was a bad shot. So he went to get his gun and it was very ironic that he actually did miss hitting the wife and he was standing right in front of her.
ReplyDeleteOne of the techniques that the author from The Kite Runner and from Things Fall Apart use to help the readers understand what’s going on in literature is theme. ReplyDeleteSome techniques that both authors use in there books to help keep the readers understanding what’s going on are literary techniques. The techniques they both use are dialect, stories and myths, these literary techniques also keeps the readers interested and into the story. Other similarities that the authors use are the conflicts between father and son, and conflicts with society.
ReplyDeleteThe authors used many of the same techniques when they wrote Things Fall Apart and The Kite Runner. They both used the dialect from the culture in text and they both wrote about people in a war. In Things Fall Apart, the characters are in a war against the Europeans. In The Kite Runner, the characters are running from a war between the Russians and Afghanistan. Another thing that they use that is in common is how they show the connection between father and son. In both stories, the fathers do not like the way their sons are turning out to be. They wanted their sons to be just like them. The way that the authors are portraying their relationships is alike. The way that all this helps the reader better understand the story is by going into detail. The authors explain and give feeling through their words and that helps create a mood. That mood carries through the story and changes with every new event that occurs to the characters. That is how they use of literary techniques help me, the reader, better understand the story.
ReplyDeleteOne of the techniques that the author uses is the different types of themes expressed in the story. In the Kite Runner, the author shows a theme of father/ son conflict and how they are affected by each other throughout the story. In Things Fall Apart, the author expresses a theme of not only father/son conflict but cultural conflict between the two villages.
ReplyDeleteThe authors in both “Kite Runner” and “Things Fall Apart” use similar literary techniques in their stories about father and son. The literary technique both the authors use is dialect. Although the dialects in the books are different, the use is the same. In “Kite Runner,” Khaled Hosseini, uses Afghani dialect such as “naan,” which is type of bread, he also uses titles for a persons social status such as “jan” and “agha.” In “Things Fall Apart,” Chinua Achebe, uses African dialect such as “egwugwu,” which are village elders that masquerade as ancestral spirits. This form of literary technique is used to help the reader better understand the culture of the people in the book.
ReplyDeleteThe techniques that the authors from both Kite Runner and Things Fall Apart are the same. Both authors used theme, and by using theme they discribed the different culture with there respected stories. They told us what each culture did as sport in Afgahanistan they did kite fighting, and in things Fall Apart wrestling os what they did.
ReplyDeleteThe writing techniques are similar in both Things Fall Apart and Kite Runner because the authors both use certain dialect. In things fall apart, they used special words like chi, obi, and ogbanje. These words were the way the tribes represented certain items. Just like in Kite Runner, they used certain dialect to represent certain things. They used words like Baba that was another way Amir said father, they used MiG, which represented the Russian soldiers. Both authors wrote about the father and son relationships. They wrote about how both sons did things like getting the last kite and working in the field in order to get their father’s approval.
ReplyDeleteThe techniques that the authors use from both Kite Runner and Things Fall Apart is dialect. The authors of theses books gave different dialects and native languages to help the readers get a mutual understanding about what the novels were about. The dialect that is used in theses novels give a vivid sound in the readers mind of how the accents of theses characters are. ReplyDeleteSome of the techniques that both authors, Khaled Hossenii and Chinua Achebe, use to help us as readers better understand what’s going on is the story is irony, dialect, culture conflicts between societies, son and father relationships, and story-telling. In “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe the irony is that the novel was based on this one character that has to adapt to many changes and then kills himself, but only gets a small paragraph in a mans book about the European expansion. Also in the book “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hossenii the ironic thing that happened so far was that Hasson had got some thing life changing form Baba, an operation that would fix his lip. After Hasson got his lip fixed he smiled so much more, and his scar was healing. This was ironic because that was the winter that Hassan had stopped smiling. “By the following winter, it was only a faint scar. Which was ironic. Because that was the winter Hassan stopped smiling.” (page47).
ReplyDeleteIn this film the house of sand and fog they has a lot of imagery, one of which constantly talked about is the bird. In the film I believe that the bird represents life, and also represent blessings. In the film Mr. Bermani says that the girl Cathy is a bird with a broken wing. I believe he says this because he thinks her live needs fixing after she tries to take her own life.
