Grab your passport because we're leaving the United States and heading to other countries and cultures. This semester we're going to read and discuss only world literature selections from outside the United States. Of course, you'll be discussing those selections with your classmates right on this page.
After briefly going over chapters one through six, the basic components of the village life proves them to be members of the society. The Umuofia village proves themselves to be a society because they have their own way of thinking. They know how to handle their own village. They have their own religion and their own traditions that set them apart from the other villages. They have their own god that they worship which is known as the goddess of the earth. They have their huts and compounds that establish them as a family or a village.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Umofia are similar to the people of today. They have personal and religious beliefs as many of today’s people do. They work hard to get their pay and have responsibilities that they tend to on a daily basis. The sense of justice and loyalty within the village is strong like that of a family. They prove that they are civilized because they have rules that they must follow and they follow them without hesitation. If a rule is broken, disciplinary measures are taken. The punishment varies on the crime committed. Each member of the community plays a part to make it a better place to live and they keep each other in line. They work hard to maintain their families and give them what they need, just as people do today. That is how they prove themselves to be part of a civilized society.
ReplyDeleteSome basic components of village life are their religion. They have a lot of believes about evil sprits in the forest and their children shouldn’t whistle in the night because bad sprits will come. All the way down to the food they eat. They eat a lot of yams. They believe yams Is the crop of a man. It takes a lot of work to grow good yams. They live in huts, their huts are in a compound witch have the shed, the wives huts, hen coops, and where they keep the goats and such. They prove themselves to be a very civilized society by have trials when someone is having troubles in the village so that it can be solved. For example, that who situation about the man beating his wife every day for no reason. They went to trial and got it resolved with him having to beg for forgiveness from his wife and bring palm wine for her family. The people of Umuofia show us in many ways that our lives today are similar by how they have their ceremonies for their marriages. They too call all their families to celebrate the marriage with them, they also bring gifts, they have bride’s maids, they spend a lot of time getting ready, and they have first dance. Nowadays, when a couple is getting married family from both the man and the woman is invited, it is respectful to bring the newly wed gifts, and the bride and groom get their time to have their dance.
ReplyDeleteThe society that the African village lives in is very much like the American customs but they practice them differently. When the village of Umuofia celebrates their yam feast, it is like our Thanksgiving, where we share food with everyone as do they. There culture is respected and strict, the culture that we live in today is like this too, everyone practices their own customs and religion.
ReplyDeleteThe people in Umuofia show that their life is like ours in many ways. They celebrate holidays and have traditions. “The Feast of the New Yam” is similar to Thanksgiving for us. The whole clan sticks together and helps each other if something goes wrong. They show how the man rules in the relationship between spouses. When Okonkwo’s daughter gets sick, he takes traditional medicine that was passes down from generations to help her. They believe in the Oracle which is like a God to them.
ReplyDeleteLives in the village of Umuofia is similar to life in any other village, new, old, isolated, and even those that are the center of attention. Although we may be taught to believe that small African civilizations are barbaric and uncivilized, the exact opposite is true. Umuofia is a near replica of any modern civilization. The villagers in Umuofia believe that men should be the head of the house and women should play a smaller roll of working for the man. This behavior can be seen in modern countries, although not many democratic. Umuofians also believe in passing down traditions. Traditions include: medicine, New Year celebration, and ritual practices such as the egwugwu. The eqwugwu are one of the ways to show how this African tribe is civilized. The egwugwu are spirits, people in disguise, who act as the Supreme Court for the Umuofians. These people decide weather or not a person in guilty of the crime and what punishment they are to receive. Such complex acts of these tribes people could not be one of a barbarian civilization.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Umuofia show us that their lives look like ours in many ways, for an example “The Feast of the New Yam” is like our “Thanks Giving.” The people of Umuofia also have the basic components of village life. They also show how they prove themselves to be members of a very civilized society. They have good traditions, beliefs, expectation, and rules of the clan/tribe. One of their traditions such as ours is that the man is the head of the house hold. Also the men of the family teach their sons how to be a man, just like our society.
ReplyDeleteUmuofia lives look a lot like ours and are a very civilized society. It shows because they have religious beliefs, they have and enforce laws, able to take care of themselves and others. Also they are up to date with some technology, they use guns and medicines.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the first six chapters and reviewing the culture and customs the Ibo people live with, I have realized that although the nine villages of Umofia are across the globe, their society is very similar to ours. People within the villages have certain superstitions, rules, and traditions just like people throughout the world have. One holiday, for instance, that American people have in common with the Ibo people is Thanksgiving. In Africa, it is not known as Thanksgiving though, but as the Feast of the New Yam, and it embarks all of the same traditions of reuniting with family and eating together. Ikemefuna, the young boy taken from a neighboring village as revenge for a murder, was send to Okonkwo’s home to live. Even though Okonkwo did not have to treat Ikemefuna as a son, he did. If a child in America, or anywhere else throughout the world, didn’t have a family, someone else would take them in as a foster child, just like Okonkwo did. This, to me, shows that the Ibo people of Umofia are just as civilized as anyone else in the world.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Umuofia lives are similar to ours in many ways. They have a holiday which they call the feast of the new yam which is alot like our thanksgiving. We all gather around as a family and get our grub on and enjoy the company of our love ones. The people of Umuofia do the same thing. The male of the household is the one in charge of everything in the village of Umuofia and thats how it is in todays society too. The man has to put his foot down and whatever is said better be done.
ReplyDeleteI believe that in their society all the people in the village should have their own idea on things. I alson saw they have hoildays that is simialr to our like thanksgiving. They have lots of food, dancing and all other things
ReplyDeleteThe village life and the people who live there show that they’re civilized because they have huts, like we have houses. They have guns like we have guns. They have ceremonies like the yam feast, which is like our thanksgiving. There are also weddings celebrated. They have the Oracle. It’s basically high-powered people that make laws and rules and the villages follow them like a religion. It’s like us how we have church and a government that creates laws. They believe in medicine mans, which is like our form of doctors. They grow crops and have farms like us. They show strict, tough love to their children like parents in our time do.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Umuofia's clan have many related life styles just like we do. Just like they have shelter, we have shelter but thiers are different due to the environment that they live in.
